"Couch Potatoes"

Kaila Elders

When seeking inspiration, I think most artists will tell you that you don’t have to look far. When I first adopted my greyhound, Greer, I suddenly always had something to draw. It was a turning point for me, because blank-page-syndrome became a rare occurrence. It made picking up my drawing tools fun and exciting, rather than stressful and full of indecision. I was drawing her non-stop, and that eventually evolved into adding in my other interests, such as day to day living, home decor, and fashion.

This series specifically was born out of imagining my dog and other greyhounds in different beautiful living rooms. Greyhounds are famously referred to as “45 mile-per-hour couch potatoes,” because although they run very fast, they spend most of their time sleeping and they looove couches. Combining these two interests felt natural and exciting and led me to this set of 4 illustrations. For each illustration I chose a colour palette, and thought about what decor and design pieces would look good together in that setting. It gave me the perfect amount of both flexibility and limitation, and ended up being a really rewarding project. Draw what you know!
