I recently had to move back to my hometown in New Brunswick, Canada because of the pandemic. I grew up on a farm so there is a lot of nature and open space, during the winter the fields are complexly covered in snow and it is like a large white canvas. I started to go for many walks in the fields once I returned home, it helped me catch my breath with everything that is going on in the world. It is nice to be alone and feel small in the middle of these large white canvas fields.
This inspired the Winter Calm illustration; I wanted the figure to feel small compared to the nature in the illustration. I liked the idea of the ski tracks carving into the shadows but not leaving a trail in the snow, to me this showed that nature remained untouched even after someone was there.
