"Hug"

by Dorothy Leung

When I made this drawing, I was in a depression and didn’t have any work. I could only bring myself to take scrap pieces of paper and paint abstract blobs of gold gouache that I never use. Later, I looked at these blobs and tried to make a drawing out of the abstract shapes based on what I was feeling at the time. In light of the depression, the theme I decided to try to convey was compassion.

I tend to recommend this as a creativity exercise to help with art block. Painting abstract blobs on crappy paper help me let go of any pressure to make it “good” or a finished product. Coming up with a drawing on top of the blob is kind of like looking for pictures in the clouds – there are no right or wrong answers and you don’t have to have a plan or concept in mind already.
