Hello – I’m Beck Ng, a surface designer and maker from Melbourne, Australia. I’ve always been creative and enjoyed drawing, painting, or making things since I was a child. When I was in my later years at high school, I knew I wanted to be a designer of some sort and eventually found my way into web design and later graphic design. Although I learned so much working in the corporate world, I wasn’t able to create the kind of work I liked or experiment creatively, so I always yearned to do my own thing.
I took a screen-printing short course with a friend in my 20s and one session was about printing pattern repeats and I was instantly fascinated. From then on, I started my surface design journey with a particular love of creating repeat patterns. I enjoy the challenge of creating something seamless, it’s like fitting puzzle pieces together, as well as creating a colour-palette that complements, but also makes the pattern stand out.
I’ve licensed my work to clients on products such as cups, lunch bags, umbrellas, scarves, baby products, heat packs, and more. I also create my own range of products with my designs under the label Fabric Drawer and sell them at markets and online.
