Hi! I am Anjana Simpson, a US-based surface pattern designer. I came to surface design by accident. In 2018 I was looking for classes to learn how to digitize my lettering and calligraphy. Once I learned about surface design, I quickly realized it was the career I never knew I wanted. I still do hand lettering but patterns are the bulk of my portfolio.
I find inspiration everywhere–gardens, textiles, bookstores, museums, and road trips are all rich fodder for themes, color palettes, and motifs. I also do a lot of my best creative thinking while working out at the gym or in that sweet quiet space just before I fall asleep. I have designed pattern collections for the quilt fabric market and have licensed patterns for baby clothing. I would love to continue to work with the infant/children’s clothing industry. I often design patterns that I wish had been in stores when I was shopping for my daughters when they were small.
I primarily work digitally and find it to be the way my brain works best. Plus, I really like the portability and the eco-friendly nature of working digitally. For me, making a pattern is like doing a puzzle and I find that satisfying and fun.
