Hello! My name is Merritt Baynes, and I am the face behind Scarlette Soleil. Like most designers, I spent the vast majority of my formative years drawing and creating. I was rarely to be found in my youth without my sketchpad and pencil and have always had a passion for color, texture, and “disheveled” lines.
I spent a decade in the field of landscape architecture exploring and cultivating ways to create community and foster connection to the natural world prior to surface pattern design, which influences much of my work today. I made the natural segue into surface pattern design in 2016, when I realized that my happiest moments were while I was creating colorful renderings or “visions” for my clients.
I have found surface pattern to be an incredible way to explore the natural world without limits or constraints. You will find that my work ranges from abstract prints to imaginative florals. While at times the work can be expressive and loose, at other times it is more refined and controlled, a reflection of my current curiosities and experimentations.
