"The Risk of Doing Nothing"

by Lydia Morgan

When it comes to inspiration, I secretly love a few limitations. Give me a blank slate and I can procrastinate for days but rules? That’s when I’m most likely to find my most unexpected and fun ideas and finally try things I’ve been avoiding.

I don’t think of myself as someone who’s a natural with type design, so designing an illustration around a quote as I did with this artwork was a challenge. The quote in question comes from Australian academic Professor Megan Davis reflecting on the necessity for Indigenous voices in the Australian government and I wanted the illustration to in some way to reflect the interconnected human rights and environmental risks that she’s referencing.
As you can see, I didn’t fully commit to using type but I did have a lot of fun playing around with hand-drawn text and composition and am happy with the way that it turned out! I would definitely recommend picking a quote to design around as a creative block exercise.
